There is no dialogue and very little text, yet through the objects our character brings through her life, we’re able to piece together her story – although it remains wonderfully open to interpretation. It’s always a relief when you pull her cuddly plush pig from a box to see that she still has it. There are items she keeps for the long run – cuddly toys, D&D figures, books – but others fall away, and yet more crop up as she matures. However, getting everything to fit is an engrossing challenge, especially when she begins to live with other people and there is someone else’s life to squeeze in. The pixel art is simple but brilliantly designed so you’re rarely stumped on what an item is. You have to put your cutlery in the cutlery drawer you have to put your laptop somewhere accessible. You can place things where you choose, but certain objects have specific homes. You simply click on one to open it, then click on each object inside, choosing a suitable place to put it. At each stage, we’re given an isometric view of each room in her home and the piles of boxes waiting there.

We begin with her first solo bedroom as a child, cramming cardboard boxes full of toys and books, and we follow her from there, through her college years and into adulthood. Between 19 our unnamed narrator makes a number of house moves, and the player has to help her unpack in each new location. All of these emotions are beautifully and wordlessly explored in Unpacking. Sometimes you find things you thought were long lost, sometimes painful memories are exhumed in the process.
Often there are difficult choices about what to leave behind. Nothing forces you to assess the events of your life, and the effects they’ve had on you, more than packing everything you own into boxes and then trying to find new places for them on the other side. A este punto negativo se le añade los controles de Switch, inadecuados para esta jugabilidad diseñada para jugar en PC. El pixelart utilizado me gusta bastante a excepción de algunos detalles que me han causado algún problema para distinguir los objetos. Lo que más me ha sorprendido del juego es la relajación y reducción de estrés que provoca jugarlo gracias a esta jugabilidad tan tranquila y una música que acompaña bastante bien, sin ser lo que más destaca. Esto se debe a varios motivos: la historia, narrada a través de los objetos que se mantienen entre cada mudanza y qué va haciendo la persona que controlamos conforme pasa el tiempo y habita nuevas casas, nos mantiene atentos e intrigados acerca de lo que está haciendo a lo largo de su vida y los distintos caminos que va tomando al crecer las animaciones, al colocar cada objeto o utensilio se observa un gran mimo por parte de los desarrolladores por el detalle de los sonidos de cada cosa al tocar los muebles o cada parte de la casa en la que la hayas puesto o la atención dedicada al detalle en todos los rincones de la casa, lo que hace la experiencia más inmersiva y completa.
Basado en realizar mudanzas y como el propio nombre indica, desempaquetar cajas y poner cada cosa en su lugar en la casa, parece que su premisa puede ser poco atractiva o incluso puede que aburrida, pero esta experiencia puede tornarse en una idea muy interesante.
